Cover Ups
Cover Ups began by accident — my hand across the lens.
What appeared was unexpected: warm, glowing light filtering through my fingers. That moment sparked a series of works created across York, and further afield.
The projects reflects on how we share and withhold experience. I share my experience while concealing it from view. Images themselves remain hidden, withholding full disclosure.
Words play a central role in this work. Here, text sits alongside each photograph as a diptych, evoking place, sound, and time. The text allows the viewer to fill in the gaps of what can’t be seen.
Cover Ups resists the culture of posting-as-proof — the quick snapshot uploaded to validate existence. Instead, it questions what it means to look, to observe, to truly see. In an age when gallery visitors photograph famous paintings rather than stand before them in silence, this work mourns a loss of presence while offering an alternative way of looking.
